This is our recipe for

Stained Glass Glazing Compound.

4 parts - Whiting ( chalk, calcium carbonate - purchase at a paint store)
2 parts - Plaster of Paris
1½ parts - Portland Cement
¼  part  - Lamp Black

1 Part - Boiled Linseed Oil
1½ - 2 parts pure Gum Turpentine

Notes: I mix the first four ingredients up in a 5 gallon bucket and cover with a lid to keep clean.  When I need to putty a project I use a disposable plastic gallon container and mix up what I need for that day. This putty sets up faster than commercial putty so don't make more than you need. I apply the putty with a  small brush. I then clean the excess putty off by using a little extra whiting sprinkled over the window along with some fine, clean redwood shavings. The whiting acts as a desiccant or drying agent and the shavings act as an abrasive to help remove the excess putty. You can use any type of wood shavings. Stay away from sappy woods like pine.
